Post Training Wheels
Boxing Trainers...
How important is the trainer to the boxer? Of utmost importance right?
So how does a boxer choose a good trainer... one that will match his own style and personality...?
A lot of boxers go through a lot of different trainers trying to see who works best with them and for them. So how do we categorize these trainers and their individual skillsets and teaching styles?

Emmanuel Stewart

Floyd Mayweather, Sr.

Freddie Roach

James McGirt

Nazim Richardson

Enzo Calzaghe

Jack Lowe

Roger Mayweather

Teddy Atlas

Panama Lewis

Jeff Mayweather

Ronnie Shields

Don Turner

Adam Booth

Jeff Fenech

Jack Mosley

George Peterson

Eddie Muhammad

Post Re: Training Wheels
its interisting that you list these trainers, these being the well known who have recieved public acclaim and monetary rewards. Its sad that so many of boxing's real teacher's remain unacknowledged in boxing YMCA'S and PAL's and other gyms without their crucial influence in developing their future champions being recognised. Guys like Walter Smith out of Kronk many years ago, and Bill Miller in Detroit also.
Anyone know who Sugar Ray Leonards first trainer was?, i'm talking pre-Dundee when Leonard was in the Olympics and before. If you look at his Olympic fights, he showed much of his pro self in those earlier fights. Who taught him that!, and don't give he's was a natural ecause even naturals need to developed. And there's plenty of other 'greats' whose developing trainers are unknown/unheard of or those credit is misattributed. You think Cus D'Amato trained Floyd Patterson, hell no- it was Johnny Florio.
Of the listed trainers, Manny Steward has proved himself as being able to teach and develop boxing in raw novices, and also refine world champions. Lennox Lewis when he was being trained by Pepe Crrea looked like he had co-ordination issues, Manny made LL as best as he could be.
Freddie Roach is another example of this, carrying on the Eddie Futch tradition of developing a pro fighter further. Buddy McGirt learned from the guy i'd pick to train my son in an ideal world- Georgie Benton, and would similalry be able to teach boxing craft as well as merely train/condition a fighter.
Anyway, thats how i'd classify between trainers- those who can teach from the ground up and those who can take a world champion and refine them into something better.
Of course, each of these trainers has their own style and training philosophy, take Floyd Snr when training Ricky Hatton, he didn't try to teach Hatton his Mighigan style of boxing, just added a few wrinkles. I think there are some bad trainers, a couple on that list (not naming names, but if you watch fights you'll know) need to develop their expertise as trainers, as often being a good fighter doesn't translate into a good trainer, especially if your fighting prowess relied so heavily on athleticism or natural instinct so much.

Post Re: Training Wheels
Thanks for the response ecto...
One of the things we all see is that when a fighter is defeated he often gets himself a new trainer.
Amir Khan went to Freddie Roach...
Ricky Hatton to Floyd Sr.
And Enzo Mac left Enzo Cal just last week too for another guy...

I guess I always assumed that joining up with one of those trainers I listed means getting an all new coaching staff.
But clearly that's not the case (Lee Beard and Hatton and Floyd)...
So maybe it would be better to seek out guys like ecto mentioned who trained the trainers or originally gave fighters their sill sets.

But my goal is to kinda try and define the trainers above, since they are the most public versions.
Then when I look at a fighter and see what his deficiencies are, I can imagine which trainer they could benefit the most from.

Take Ricky Hatton. He's gotta be done with Mayweather Sr. And obviously Lee Beard didn't teach the man anything worthwhile for the Pac fight either.
So to whom should he turn?
Perhaps Enzo Calzaghe? He's sorta local for Ricky so they could interact often, even between bouts, perhaps training together close to Ricky's home and family - which seems to matter to him. But what type of fighter does Enzo produce? Or how could he modify Ricky's training to improve his fighting? I don't think Ricky's gonna be a 1,000 punch a fight kind of guy.
What about Jack Lowe? He uses some innovative strongmen type training methods to develop power in Pavlik. I think Ricky and the Lowe camp would get along well and drink together and that hitting tires with sledgehammers might be right up Hatton's alley - but does that meet his needs in the ring?
Clearly Ricky needs to work on keeping his hands up and not leading with his dad-blasted chin. Emmanuel Steward, then? He's a defensive trainer it seems who has greatly elevated the defensive game of both Lennox Lewis and Wlad Klitschko. Don't know that Ricky and him would be buds per se... but maybe you don't need friends and business to mix?

So how about those other trainers... which would make Ricky move his head and fight from behind raised gloves? Eddie Muhammad seems to keep Chad Dawson well schooled in that vein... him perhaps?

But I don't mean just Hatton... back to Amir Khan - I don't really think Freddie Roach is the perfect fit for Amir. I think Khan will benefit greatly and is bound to expand his skills and ring movement, simply by virtue of training with Manny... but Freddie is a short term fix. The Parkinson's will eventually win. And I don't know that Freddie is that great at teaching tall thin guys to fight tall and thin...

What do you guys think?
Who is defensive? Quick? Geared towards KOs, power, or speed? Which one is best for footwork? Attitude? Height?
