EMBATTLED ITV is scrapping its boxing coverage after revealing it can no longer afford to screen costly live fights.

An ITV spokesman said the overheads associated with its Big Fight Live show were simply too expensive. “At the moment, boxing on free-to-air commercial TV is not economically sustainable,” he said.

Bosses pulled the plug just nine months into a two-year deal after broadcasting only 11 live shows.

The channel has already axed 1,000 jobs and its programme budget has been slashed by 25 percent in the last year.

I bet the ******** will still be showing costly live football. :(

It's all going wrong with ITV and Setanta... I hope the BBC take an interest in Froch, Fury, Murray etc. but you know it's bad when you need the BBC to step in... I'm guessing they end up on Sky.

Warren talking about the BBC:

Quote:
It's not all good news on the TV front though as ITV - as I mentioned last week - are pulling out of boxing, leaving the sport without a terrestrial television presence.

And it's a disgrace that the BBC are not getting behind the fight game, especially when it has a proven track record of delivering big numbers and is one of our most successful sports.

Khan's fights on ITV pulled in six or seven million viewers even when they were on late at night. And the BBC could be equally successful if it made an investment in the sport.

There are some great people at the BBC who are keen to get involved in boxing again and they are exas- perated by the attitude of their bosses, who just don't want to know.

This week, there have been complaints from the Beeb about having to share up to £130million of the licence fee with rival operators, including helping to fund ITV's regional news output.

But if the BBC actually delivered what audiences wanted - and I'm talking specifically about boxing - then it would not come under attack.

I am not exaggerating, but i am completely gutted by this. Decent fights in smallish venues with decent bills.

I also really think ITV might be missing the boat with Tyson Fury!

Setanta look properly screwed now also:

Struggling Setanta runs out of rescue options

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/76f79502-5e84 ... abdc0.html

Setanta, the embattled sports broadcaster, is on the brink of collapse after its board failed to find an 11th hour solution at the weekend to save it from administration.

The Irish broadcaster, which declined to comment, has been locked in survival talks since Friday and has explored various options including a fire sale of its international operations but it is understood that on Sunday night the company had not found any buyers.

Len Blavatnik, the Russian-born US citizen and billionaire who offered Setanta a £20m lifeline but has since walked away, also spoke to the board at the weekend but did not offer a fresh rescue package.

One person close to the process said: “Talks over the weekend would have been out of kindness. Mr Blavatnik is no longer involved.”

The company is expected to announce it is appointing Deloitte as administrators....

Setanta have gone into administration and there channels are no longer available over here. Sky is the only hope now with ITV gone, but i think they'll come through for us.
