He was superb. I think he deserved better luck in his first fight with Chavez. When I saw the fight for the first time, I thought "you have to win". One of the best fights in history, and probably the best of the '90s.
"Two seconds from glory", I would like to read it.

Re: Meldrick Taylor fights
I think after the second loss to Chavez he started dropping of the radar as far as televised fights go.
I seen Meldrick fight live and met him after the fight back in 1987. He was real nice and open to fans. It was a bit before he won his first title. But he was a very likable(unlike his stable mate Tyrell Biggs who was also there)
Meldrick was one of those guys whose star didnt shine for long but it shone very brightly. Superb for a shortish period of time. Win or lose the 1st Chavez fight effectively ruined him as one of the very best.

Re: Meldrick Taylor fights
I thought he had potential to reach the same level as Pernell Whittaker but for some reason they rushed him into fights that he was no way ready for. He may have done a good job on Buddy McGirt as a novice when he 1st won a title but I doubt he would have been such a comprehensive winner if they had rematch, and downhill from then on in.
The 1st fight with JCC was a classic and in my view he was robbed of victory but after that they continued force him into fights that were destined to end his career (Terry Norris fight instantly comes to mind).
His hand speed, boxing ability, combinations and heart would have been more than a match for a lot of fighters but crazy management ruined him. You only have to look at how late in his career did Sweet Pea take on JCC yet he and Meldrick started out at the same time in the same divison.
