Ashley Sexton 9-0 (5) won the English flyweight title with a very spectacular knockout of former British title challenger Usman Ahmed 6-3-1 (0) inside a round. Ahmed is tough but completely lacking in technique and Sexton pretty much bossed him around for the first minute and a half before detonating a massive arching right hook which sent Ahmed down face first and bringing in the referee’s intervention. Only January but a more destructive knockout will be hard to find this year.
Touted prospect George Groves 8-0 (6) again looked great in spurts but shipped a few right handers before knocking out Grigor Sarohanian 2-3 (0) in three rounds. Sarohanian looked really tough and came to have a go and caught the casual looking Groves a few times with overhand right’s. Groves upped it a bit in the second and had his man down but Sarohanian lost his gumshield causing a break which let him make it to the bell. However a big body shot in the third left Sarohanian in a heap and he couldn’t beat the count.
Heavyweight prospect Tom Dallas moved to 9-0 (7) with a 2nd round TKO over Yavor Marinchev 5-18 (3). Despite Marinchev’s record , he is tough and has only been stopped once previously despite very tough opposition. Dallas showed us what we already know, that he is big, robotic but powerful. He bullied the smaller Marinchev from the start and had him looking uncomfortable. In the 2nd, Dallas manoeuvred Marinchev to the ropes and dropped him with a body shot. Marinchev got up and fought to the bell but his manager pulled him out.
Powerful Larry Olubamiwo 7-1 (6) blew right through former prospect Scott Belshaw 10-4 (7) also at heavyweight. The “War Machine” marched in menacingly and put Belshaw over with a good straight right. Belshaw got up but was dropped three more times before the referee stopped the bout. Olubamiwo is never going to make a boxer but his power is excellent. Belshaw needs to find new employment as he seems to have very little punch resistance.
In a non televised bout Ben Murphy 7-2-1 (3) created a minor upset with a points win for the Southern Area lightweight title over Lee Cook 12-2-1 (3)
