Roar. Wes Fowler, senior pastor of First Baptist Church, poses for a photo next to a broken glass window in the church’s sanctuary after a tornado devastated the Mayfield, Ky., area on Monday. , December 13, 2021.
MAYFIELD, Ky. (AP) – After a powerful storm destroyed their town on the street below their church, Rev. Wes Fowler and his family found themselves in a block of devastation: downed power lines, piles of trash and debris. help they could not show in the dark.
Later, after she returned home safely, her daughter had a question that puzzled her: “My little girl asked me, ‘Why would God allow this?'” said Fowler, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Mayfield.
While he believes God allowed the storm, he did not answer why people in western Kentucky, where he was baptized, grew up and decided to raise his family, were not spared from Friday’s storm, which left many dead and communities. shaking in at least five states. But he felt he knew what to do next: glorify God in the midst of suffering and serve the needy.

“It’s easier to serve the Lord when things are good,” Fowler said. “It’s very difficult to serve him when there are problems, and I think that’s when people want to see if our faith is true, if our faith is true.”
Although their church buildings were destroyed, First Baptist staff and volunteers rallied to donate whatever they could to help survivors cope with the aftermath of the disaster, not to do so—gift cards, food, generators, water, a listening ear and more .
Blake Schuecraft, associate pastor, said church leadership formed three groups after the storm: One to help people affected by the church, which numbered about 350 on Sunday; the second was focused on the maintenance and cleaning of the First Baptist campus; and one-third to support the entire community of about 10,000 people and coordinate donations.
A Georgia ministry showed up with generators ready to deliver coffee to the community, and First Baptist invited them to use their equipment, Schuecraft said. He offered to help churches as far away as New York and people in Florida and Illinois: “Some people just take what they have and bring it here.”
Do Not Ignore Window Chips And Cracks
The church, founded long before the Civil War, had been in its renovated, century-old sanctuary for about two months when the storm hit. Some of its stained glass windows were broken and the wall was ripped apart, delaying the reopening. But that was fine by First Baptist standards.
Across the street at the church’s children’s home, the decorated Christmas tree on top was miraculously intact, but shards of glass, roofing felt and other debris were strewn across the floor as workers shoveled holes in the roof of the church’s temporary worship space. .
Outside, and in front of one of the dusty doors, vending machines for coffee, spices, and sweet pastries formed curved tables under a large cross in the other broken window.
Debbie Samples, a member of First Baptist for nearly 20 years, spent hours Monday preparing pot after pot of coffee to hand out in Styrofoam cups to community cleanup workers and neighbors who rolled down the windows of cars driving through the wrecked town.

That small consolation was the well-known work of the Examples, who often provide food to the bereaved and needy through one of the church services. Heartbroken by the loss, Samples wanted to help as much as he could.
“This church has been an important part of our lives, but it’s not just a building — it’s our church family,” Samples said. “He’s the one who calls us, or the one we call when things are down … it’s Christ, and we believe we can shine through.”
Samples said he was sleeping with more than a dozen relatives and neighbors in his basement late Friday as the storm roared like a train. They have an unwavering appeal to hide there, the only house in their neighborhood with a basement. Located just a few miles from Mayfield, the area was untouched by the chaos – so he was impressed to see the devastation unfolding in the city.
“The pictures don’t match what we’re seeing,” Samples said. “It’s worse than we can imagine.

Fowler, too, remembered the fear of the night he and his wife covered their three children in the tunnel when the roof shook violently, covering them in a cloud of dust.
“It probably lasted … 30 seconds or so. It felt like five minutes,” Fowler said. “The kids were crying and I was telling them in my voice, ‘We’re going to be OK. We’re going to be OK.’ … But in my mind I was thinking maybe we’re not going to be OK.”
Days later, as the sun shines on the broken, empty glass, Fowler has no answer to his daughter’s question. He believed in an almighty God, but he couldn’t explain why the storm hit Mayfield and not another town.
“I had to look at my eight-year-old daughter, who was looking at me for an answer,” she said, “and I had to say… ‘I don’t know. I don’t know.’ “
