Prestige Assisted Living At Lancaster

With 20 years in business and over a million windows installed, American Vision Windows is the number one replacement window company in LA/Ventura.

From bay windows to patio windows and more, we love helping our Los Angeles community exceed their home improvement goals.

Bill and Kathleen were buyers just like you, looking to renovate their home with new windows and patio doors. Sensing the draft on the window next to the newborn’s crib and the large temperature difference between the floors, they knew something had to change.

In their search for an energy-efficient solution, they began to realize the benefits of different window styles and materials that reduce noise and energy costs for a safer, more comfortable and more economical home. Unfortunately, they encountered a number of unreliable contractors with poor work ethics. Companies took deposits and closed stores or gave customers worse terms with bad guarantees.

That experience inspired American Vision Windows’ mission: “To revolutionize the home improvement industry one customer at a time, while improving the lives of our employees for the better.” For 20 years, Bill and Kathleen have followed that mission, installing more than one million replacement windows in California and Arizona, providing the same care and quality they would expect for their loved ones.

Cattle are unloaded from a trailer into pens at the JBS Beef Plant in Grand Island, Nebraska. The factory was not closed despite the outbreak of COVID-19. JBS employs 3,600 people and produces nearly 1 billion pounds of beef annually.

On April 3, Governor Pete Ricketts issued a warning to Nebraskans: “If you want to watch football this fall, you better stay home.”

The new coronavirus has hit the east coast and it was only a matter of time before it affected almost every point on the map. He had been to Grand Island, a central Nebraska town of 51,000. (See where the number of COVID-19 cases are rising and falling in the US)

Danny Lemos, a 39-year-old tire store manager, was sure it was allergies because every year, when the bareness of winter in Nebraska gives way to budding trees, Lemos coughs.

Danny Lemos, 39, looks out the window of his home in Grand Island, Nebraska. He, his mother and his father, who works at the JBS beef plant in Grand Island, all contracted and survived COVID-19.

But it wasn’t an allergy. Within weeks, he was airlifted to a hospital in Omaha. His father, Danny Sr., who was also ill, was on a ventilator, and his mother, Candi, was coughing and quarantined at home. They all had the coronavirus.

“I’ve never felt so helpless in my life,” says Candi. “I held my breath every time the phone rang. I had days when I thought I was going to lose them both.”

Candi isn’t sure how her husband, a 62-year-old with chronic lung disease, survived COVID-19, but she is “99.9 percent” sure how he contracted it. He works on the packing line at JBS, a large meatpacking plant in the eastern part of the city. As of the third week of April, the Grand Island Central District Health Department has reported 560 known cases of COVID-19. JBS accounted for almost 40 percent of them.

Like many other central Midwest communities currently plagued by the virus, Grand Island’s biggest industry is meatpacking. JBS employs 3,600 people and produces nearly 1 billion pounds of beef annually.

Even before President Donald Trump signed an executive order in late April to keep meatpacking plants open, Gov. Ricketts was adamant that Nebraska would not close meatpacking plants. Ricketts, one of five governors who have not issued a stay-at-home order for his state, said he fears “civil unrest” if Americans don’t eat.

Meat and football are characteristic of life in Nebraska in many ways. There are 6.1 million cattle in the country of 1.86 million people. And on football Saturdays in the fall, the University of Nebraska Memorial Stadium becomes the third largest city in the state.

“I worry about the morale of the city if we don’t have Friday night football,” Grand Island City Council candidate Jack Sheard said.

Life in Grand Island, a city with two Walmarts, three interstate exits and one regional airport, probably won’t be back to normal for much longer. It became a hotbed of the COVID-19 disease that at one point eclipsed New York’s per capita rate. On May 20, the Central District Health Department confirmed 1,511 cases of COVID-19; the county is responsible for 47 of the state’s 132 deaths.

Those numbers have decreased over the past week, although Gov. Ricketts has yet to announce direct health measures in the region. The district no longer issues JBS numbers; Ricketts said the state would not specify the number of cases at each plant. Across Nebraska, meatpacking workers are responsible for nearly a quarter of the state’s confirmed cases, with 2,700 positive cases among meat producers and eight deaths.

Grand Island, with its factories churning out barrels of grain, cereal, frozen foods and ammunition, prides itself on being one of the quiet cogs that keep America moving. Many people here work with their hands and feet. Most of them are considered essential and almost none of their work can be done from home with a laptop and Zoom calls.

“While the social distancing model may work in many cities,” says Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele, “it really doesn’t work in a city like ours. People are expected to come to their workplaces.”

In Nebraska, cattle are outnumbered three to one. Here is a large cattle ranch outside the town of Grand Island.

Grand Island prides itself on being one of the most diverse cities in the Midwest. Manufacturing jobs brought workers from Mexico, Sudan, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Cuba, Vietnam and Somalia, many of whom came to America to create a better life. Sixty-four percent of students in the Grand Island Public School District are minorities.

But the pandemic has revealed a tale of two Big Islands: the rugged east side overwhelmed by COVID-19; and the relatively unscathed north and west end, where people became frustrated that everything was closed. (Data shows that African Americans are disproportionately affected by COVID-19.)

“It pretty much isolates the blame from the city and the type of people who are disproportionately affected just because of the type of work they do,” says Audrey Lutz, executive director of the Multicultural Alliance of Grand Island.

“I think there’s a part of Grand Island that’s not taking ownership … it’s a problem that affects everybody.

Alma Rawlings and her husband, Terry, own a downtown check-cashing business that primarily serves meatpacking workers from Grand Island and nearby Gibbon, Nebraska. Rawlings’ family immigrated to the United States from Guatemala, and she knows her business, TA Latino Check Cashing, serves a great need in the community. Many of her clients send money home to support their families.

Terry is 65, which puts him in the vulnerable category for COVID-19, and their job involves close contact and contact with money at times when she can’t find hand sanitizer in town.

The Rawlings take every precaution to stay safe. They decided to close the store on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to give themselves two days less to be on display, and they covered most of the cash register window with vinyl.

Alma, 47, made a solution of isopropyl alcohol and water and put it in spray bottles so her customers could disinfect their hands while waiting in line. She no longer lets her husband near the customers; he does the paperwork on the last shift.
