This is where ribbons attached to the top of the curtains are tied around the rod to create little bows. It is a very casual, relaxed and rustic style, often used with linen and other light fabrics.

Modern and stylish, a pencil pleat consists of long, tight pleats from the top of the curtain. These neat and regular pieces at the top of the curtain are about the size of a pencil, hence the name.

A more traditional and formal curtain hanging style is the Goblet pleat, which looks great in a Victorian, Georgian or other high-ceilinged home.

This style of pleated curtain is a cross between a pinch pleat and a pencil pleat. A pleated curtain is made by sewing pleated tape to the back of the top edge, then pulling cords in the tape to achieve the desired level of pleating.
French pleat curtains have groups of triple pleats, placed evenly on the curtains to create a formal headboard. These curtains stack neatly on both sides and are ideal for a formal dining room or living room.

A box pleat is made up of single pieces of fabric, creating folds straight down the length of the curtain.
Roman blinds are fabric curtains that are folded or rolled down vertically. They are a newer option of window treatments.
Blinds do not take up as much space as curtains and do not reach the floor, making them a popular choice for functional rooms such as bathrooms.
Another type of blinds are balloon festoon curtains, where the fabric rises when the blinds are raised, and releases when they are lowered.

Pelmets and valances are placed over windows and over curtain ends to give a finished look to the top of the window and curtain, and to evoke the track or rod.
They can be used to create the illusion of height and change the size of the window. They provide a nice finish to your windows while hiding curtain rods and other fasteners.
Often made of chipboard and covered with decorative fabric, they are a great way to hide several curtain rods (used when hanging several layers of curtains such as vertical and block curtains) in a beautiful way.
Valances are made for the same principles, but they are much softer in appearance with a rounded or pleated band. A coat is usually soft and draped, while a pelmet is strong and structured and usually, but not always, pulled.

Then there are the different colors and shades to choose from – although most interior designers tend to choose neutral shades as they are less likely to fade or to go out of style.
It is always a good idea to have curtains lined to preserve longevity and give them a sense of richness. Lined and netted curtains insulate longer and provide a complete light barrier that helps prevent clothing from fading from the sun. Lined curtains also help the clothes hang and fall more evenly.
Regarding the length of the curtains, it is fashionable to have your curtains flow with the floor (instead of merging). curtains should always be long – they should only touch the floor.
