DECATUR — When Rodney Walker resigned his Decatur City Council seat in July, he said it was so he could contribute to his community in other ways.

“It’s right there on campus where the old Garcia building is, next to the warehouse,” Walker said. “Hit the corner there. Perfect location.”
When Walker left his seat on the city council, he hinted at his future plans. He said his position has “hindered me on a number of occasions” due to conflict of interest laws.
“I had to be ready for when some of these opportunities came along,” he said during an interview with the Herald & Review in July.
According to Walker, obtaining the gambling and liquor licenses was not a conflict. The dilemma was caused by the location of the company. The building is located in a tax increment financing area.
Decatur Restaurants From Our Past
“State elected officials cannot be directly or indirectly involved, including their family members, in a TIF district,” Walker said. “I can’t do as much in the community as I did on the board, but I still help the community in other ways by being an investor.”
Sketchy Grill will seat about 50 patrons with a planned after-hours window. “When it’s closed inside, food can still be served later,” Walker said.
Hours later were part of Walker’s plans. “We wanted to make it possible for students to get food,” Walker said.
The meal will start at 3 p.m. and will remain open until approximately 9 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday. The window will be open until around midnight.

The menu will have a variety of options, from breakfast items to sandwiches, salads, wings, lamb and fish. “And we’ll have a small bar that seats about 10,” Walker said.
Another focus of the Walker community is sports. He is the executive director of the SkiWalker International Sports Complex, 400 E. Eldorado St., and the Eisenhower High School boys’ basketball coach. Walker, 47, a 1991 graduate of St. Theresa High School, played professional basketball abroad for eight years before returning to Decatur.
The restaurant will continue his passion with a game room and televisions installed throughout the dining room, but with families and children welcome. “I want it to be accessible to kids so they can get something good off the menu,” Walker said.
The coronavirus pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges for restaurants, causing some to close permanently. Others were closed before the pandemic or for other reasons. Some have not publicly stated the reason for their closure. Several local restaurants are temporarily closed. This list does not include them. In cases where it was unclear whether the closure was temporary or permanent, we erred on the temporary side. What did we miss? Let us know by emailing DECNevs@lee.net. MANDATORY PHOTO

Cox was a three-year starter for Lakeview, and while his teams were often outplayed, it was never easy for anyone to win.
