For a late lunch at Birmingham’s beloved Origin Pita Stop, Nadeem Shunrah is the jewel of a Middle Eastern diner owned for nearly 40 years.

He puts a spicy, thick tomato stew on triangles of soft pita bread. His chef Kavi prepared a dish specially for him. That is one of the advantages of owning a restaurant.

The colorful combination of roasted tomatoes, garlic, parsley and jafenos evokes memories of the meat Shunrah’s mother prepared when she grew up in Ramla, a plague village outside Erusem.

One of seven children, Nadeem Shunnara moved to Birmingham as a teenager in 1965, and each day on her way to school, she passed a gorgeous terracotta-decorated building that would later become his second home.

“My family came here and my father bought a house on Green Spring Avenue not far from here,” he recalled. “My sister and I went to Ramsay High School and passed this building on our way to Ramsay High School.”

At the time, the building contained a barber shop, a florist, a swimming pool and a deli, Shunnara said. Across the street was a pharmacy and a drinking fountain, where he and his older sister Fadwa stopped by in the afternoon to buy a Coca-Cola cart on their way home from school.

After graduating from Ramsey High School in 1968, Shunnara was drafted into the US Army and stationed in Okinawa. Returning to Birmingham, he and his brother Sam ran a grocery store, Ned’s Food Store, in Wenona for about 10 years.

Meanwhile, in 1977, Birmingham restaurant manager Munir Akavi opened a pie shop in the building Shunrach passed on his way to and from school.

At the time, Sunara’s brother owned the Nabeel Market in Homewood, where he sold food imported from the Mediterranean. Akavi, who later opened Moneer’s Garden Deli & Grill in nearby Edgewood, was also one of his clients.

“(Nabil) sent stuff here when Munir was here. Send him feta cheese and olives,” says Shunnara. “One time when I walked in, my brother said, ‘Nadim, would you like to go buy Munir?’ He wants to sell.”

So in 1982 Shunnara acquired Pita Station and over time gradually expanded the restaurant from one to three.

“When I came here, I learned a lot from Munir and his staff,” he says. “And it all started… “From 40 to 150 now.”

Shunnara opened a second Pita Stop location, the Pita Stop Express, in Cahaba Heights in 2010, but since then he has sold off interest in the business. (He now closes the first position of the feet origin stop to distinguish the two.)

For many years, his wife Cleo, whom Sui married in 1973, was his right-hand man in the restaurant. She often prepared quiveto and grape leaves and, like her husband, enjoyed meeting and greeting customers. She died in November 2019.

“She was the backbone of this place,” Shunnara says. “Everyone loved her her.” She was like her mother to everyone.

One of Shunnara’s most loyal customers is Karim Shamsi-Basha, a freelance photographer and writer who discovered the Pita Stop shortly after moving to Birmingham in 1989.

Born in Syria, Shamsi-Basha was looking for authentic Middle Eastern food and someone recommended Pita Stop. He became a huge fan of the restaurant as well as its owner.

“In my view, Nadeem is basically the godfather of Middle Eastern food in Birmingham,” says Shamsi-Basha. “I grew up in Damascus. I was 18 when I immigrated to the United States. I know what Middle Eastern food should taste like and his food is probably the closest to home. It’s not street food, it’s just at home.”

“Nearly everyone in Birmingham knows Pi Station,” says Shamsi-Basha. “I mean, there are more Americans than Middle Eastern people. I like this place because I want to spread my culture here.”
