Windows Workflow Foundation Alternative – Why are companies still using Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) after it was removed? “Good for joining forces,” the message board would say – and it’s true, but it’s time to be clear. Although not dead, WF was removed from the .NET roadmap when .NET 5 was released and Microsoft no longer supported it. WF will be around until 2024 when NET 8 is released (maybe longer), but it’s better to switch now to a different system. Depending on your organization, now may be the time to try a smaller service. Microservices have great potential When leaving WF, users can switch to another system, but it is possible to use the system at all. Many businesses are already developing large applications from small, flexible components that are not functional – through microservices. Microservices development is when you break down your application into discrete functions and develop each one independently. The technique is the same as WF: you make each transaction work, and combine them into one process. WF provides flexibility and support for long-term planning. Microservices provide these benefits and provide more control over how each service is integrated compared to a standard workflow. You can choose gRPC, ASP.NET Core, or other frameworks with multiple APIs that are suitable for your problem. The only problem you will face in the transition from WF to Microservices is that non-developers are left out. If you don’t have developers and users, leaving WF is not a good idea. Developers have to build and maintain small projects, so non-developers are out of luck. How to prepare for Microservices companies that want to replace WF with microservices should start with the following steps. Have a discussion in the development team about the pros and cons of removing the workflow from the development process. Is microservice an option worth pursuing? How good is this group? What training will be required? Find out more about microservices, learn about their uses in your area. Try to understand how your team would like to build this project and what it needs. Print part of your application based on previous research and compare the results to expectations. Communicating with developers How working with WF compares to working with microservices. Finally, discuss the results of the model with the stakeholders and, if the small projects meet your needs, create an official plan to replace the WF. If Functionality is important to your organization At Inedo, we think that Microservices is a great choice for WF, but we understand that it is not for everyone. Some companies require an operating system for their system. You may want to consider low-code or no-code that is similar to traditional programming but is designed to use pre-built components instead of traditional applications. CoreWF, a community, open source version of WF, can also be a solution. We don’t recommend looking for CoreWF, because it might not be ready for production, but there’s no reason not to keep an eye on it. There is a time to prepare Like WCF or Webforms, WF will not go away. There is still time to decide on the best solution to your problem, try out possible solutions, and come up with a plan to exit WF successfully. The most important thing for your organization is to start a conversation about aging technology. Starting the planning process now saves you from the risk of making hasty decisions later. Its application is a medium that includes monitoring the status of assets in the system. Back in 2008, Microsoft (MS) introduced new technologies with the release of Visual Studio 2008: Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), and Functionality Foundation (WF). Working in a company that uses a lot of MS products for development, the first choice is to go with WF. When I finished studying at the library, I thought it was more complicated than I wanted. The use of WF will not be easy and the fact that it has, rather, an educational system, there must be an option. I am interested in the idea of creating an easy to use library. It will be a learning experience but it can take a lot of time.
Why reinvent the wheel? So I started searching the internet to find the best solution. I stumbled upon a free, open source project. A library that allows the developer to create state machines and functions based on lightweight state machines directly in .NET code. Sweet, just what I like.
The GitHub project provides information, including the details necessary to get started as a developer. It has examples of linked functions to see the actual code in action. You can close the repository and add the project to your solution, or, the easiest and best way, use the NuGet package. It also includes instructions on how to install it in your solution using the Visual Studio Package Manager or the .Net CLI.
To get started, we’ll look at a simple workaround and implement a solution using the traditional ‘if-then-then’ approach of Future Law.

The vertical mode has more dimensions. In this example, we assume that a key is used to control time. During the day, say from 06:00 in the morning to 06:00 in the evening, the lights will be in the mode to save electricity.
The usual solution is to use the ‘if-then-else’ method. In this case, I have to agree, this method is the best option. No additional libraries are required. For comparison, we will also implement a solution using Stateless.
The number is static. No native C# code is required. Just in case you’re wondering, change

Put your state machine in your code. In this example, I’ve made an initialization in a constructor class.
You! That’s a lot of things you have to do to install a light bulb. Again, as I said before, this is an easy example of getting your feet wet with the homeless. You can continue to make some code to test or you can try covering the code example on GitHub. The solution has two functions, the one discussed above is the Lightswitch function.
We will not use stateless for simple functions like Lightswitch. When the traditional methods of using ‘if-then-then-there’ or even ‘switch-case’ architectures are too difficult to use, install stateless. Consider the state diagram below.
